How do you start the Starfield Shattered Space DLC?

Wanting to get straight into the Shattered Space DLC action? Here's how you get into the DLC's new content.

How do you start the Starfield Shattered Space DLC?

Whether you’re returning to Starfield after a long break or not, you’ll want to know how you access the Starfield Shattered Space content. Fortunately, the requirements to gain access to the Shattered Space missions only require the completion of the first Starfield mission: One Small Step. However, Bethesda actually recommend that you hold off on diving into the DLC until you reach the player level of 35 in order to face the difficulties of the DLC.

Finding The Oracle

To get the DLC mission started, you’ll either need to:

  • Complete One Small Step
  • Jump your ship into the orbit of a planet with no active objective (if you are loading the DLC into a pre-existing save).
    • The station appears to generate in orbit of a random planet. In our playthroughs, Jaffa II was one of the locations The Oracle could spawn.

From there, you will start the Shattered Space main quest, What Remains. On receiving the quest, you’ll get a distress call from a distant space station called The Oracle.

The Oracle

  • Check your Starfield map and jump to the The Oracle (it should be nearby).
    • The Oracle is a pretty large station so you can’t miss it. It’s also highlighted on the map with a blue marker.
  • Approach and then dock your ship.

That’s it. Your journey into Shattered Space begins with an exploration of The Oracle. Simple, right?

Fortunately, we’ve already gathered everything there is in Shattered Space, and you can easily access our guides via our Starfield companion app.

How does Shattered Space begin?

Shattered Space begins with the investigation of a derelict spacestation known as The Oracle as part of the What Remains quest. From there, your presence aboard the station reveals numerous anomalies, including a Vortex Horror, which will reveal the location the House Va’ruun homeworld: Va’ruun’kai.

From there, the player is thrown into a broken world which has been ravaged by an event known as the Vortex Incident. People are missing, and numerous factions threaten to tear what little remains apart.

Do you need to complete the Starfield main quest to start Shattered Space?

Bethesda have confirmed that you do not need to complete the Starfield main quest in order to access the Shattered Space DLC content.

However, you will need to complete the first few mandatory Starfield missions (One Small Step) and join Constellation before you’ll get the prompt to visit The Oracle – the starting location of the Shattered Space DLC.

This more or less means that you can dive into the first Shattered Space mission “What Remains” very early into your campaign, but Bethesda recommend against this. While you’ll be able to start the mission, Bethesda actually recommends that you approach the DLC only once your player level has reached level 35.

Can you use the REV-8 vehicle in Shattered Space?

One of Bethesda’s leading figures Tim Lamb stated that the REV-8 Starfield vehicle is available for use on the DLC’s setting of Va’ruun’kai. This should enable players to explore the Starfield Dazra map easily and quickly (though players may want to avoid driving inside the city hub to avoid racking up a huge bounty for running over civilians).

Starfield Shattered Space trailer

Before heading in, it’s worth giving the Shattered Space deep dive trailer a watch to see what kind of environment and threats the DLC is offering. A greater focus on melee combat has been discussed, so you might want to ready some heavier Starfield armor, or level up your boost pack skills before heading on to Va’ruun’kai.
