Starfield ship customization

If you’re looking to learn about Starfield ship customisation, we’ve got the perfect guide for getting your aircraft ship shape and ready for launch.

With Starfield ship customization looking like such a big part of Bethesda’s upcoming space-faring RPG, plenty of you are trying to plan your galactic cruiser ahead of time. So, we’ve put together a guide detailing everything we know about the mechanic so far and how you can expect to deck out your rocket ride when the game finally arrives.

For an idea of what you might face on the planets your ship lands on, check out our guides to the Starfield map, Starfield creatures, Starfield factions, and the Starfield NPC list. Or, if you just want to know when you can get behind the throttle, check out the Starfield release date.

What is Starfield ship customization?

Starfield ship customization allows you to pilot the spaceship of your dreams, with the ability to swap parts in and out from a wide catalogue of options. If you want to check some of those options out, our Starfield ships guide has a whole table dedicated to the components we know so far.

Thanks to Todd Howard’s 2022 Starfield showcase presentation, we know that not only can you customise the outside of your ship, but the interior too. We don’t know quite as much about that yet, but it’s good to know that as the captain you seem to have complete control over what goes on on-board. That’s the sort of level of immersion we anticipate from Bethesda.

How does Starfield ship customization work?

The whole idea of Starfield ship customization is to give you an opportunity to choose what sort of ship you want to fly. It’s not all fun and games, though. You can’t just attach eleven lasers and leave it at that. As our Starfield ships guide points out, there are six main stats you need to balance, eleven sub-stats under that, as well as a reactor core to keep from overloading.

If all that sounds like a lot, that’s because it is, but we’re assuming there will be the classic Bethesda approach to this with plenty of in-game tutorials and a slow-burn introduction to spaceship mechanics. There are also plenty of Starfield ship types and Starfield ship manufacturers, so limitation on options doesn’t seem to be a problem.
