Starfield weapon mods

By carefully selecting the best Starfield weapon mods, you can transform any gun or blade into the ultimate weapon.

Even if you’ve found the best gun in Starfield, there’s always room for improvement. You can tailor your weapons to any playstyle by installing Starfield weapon mods up to the weapon’s maximum mod slots limit. By adding a silencer to your weapon, you can take a stealthier approach. By adding a muzzle, you can reduce recoil, and it doesn’t end there. Want to make your pistol a semi-automatic? You can do that. Want more damage? Upgrade your receiver.

Just remember: creating weapon mods requires research at a research laboratory to unlock specific upgrades. You’ll also need the necessary credits and resources to build weapon mods for each individual weapon.

What are Starfield weapon mods?

A Starfield weapon mod is a component or modification you can add to almost any Starfield weapon. You will need to be at a weapon workbench in order to attach and detach different modifications. You can use weapon mods to completely change your playstyle by increasing a gun’s accuracy, magazine capacity, or giving a gun explosive ammunition for additional damage. Creating a weapon mod requires resources, but you can also find pre-modded weapons on enemies, or randomly in numerous containers.

Each weapon comes with a “mod slots” stat, determining how many modifications that weapon can support. For example, the Drum Beat can support 7 different modifications in total, allowing you to equip a new scope, receiver, magazine, muzzle, and whatever else you have researched.

How do Starfield weapon mods work?

Once you’ve unlocked a Starfield weapon mod at the research laboratory, you can build and equip them to the appropriate weapons at a weapons workstation. Building a weapon mod from scratch will cost you a few Starfield resources, so make sure you have a good mining setup on one or all of your outposts.

Weapon mods add a number of modifiers to the weapon on which they’re equipped. Mods can do everything from reducing the weight of an item, to changing its ammo or damage type, and can even improve your aiming stability.

Legendary Starfield weapon mods

As in previous Bethesda titles, Starfield has a series of Legendary modifications which provide unique and powerful bonuses. Some are attached to named weapons, while others are added randomly to a large pool of weapons. The former are often rewards for completing quests or discovering and exploring secret locations, while the latter can be found randomly on enemies, or in containers.

It isn’t possible to craft legendary mods or remove them from weapons, but there are Starfield mods that get around this by modifying the game.

For more on customization, check out our character creation and skills guides, or check out our full Starfield armor database.

Can you remove Starfield weapon mods from one weapon and equip it to another?

Sadly, Starfield does not allow you to repurpose existing weapon mods, only refunding you a portion of the upgrade’s cost. Sadly, this means your customization options are limited by your skill level or your luck with RNG when weapons spawn/drop.
