Mantis

If you’ve heard rumors of some incredible equipment out in space, our Starfield Mantis walkthrough can get you great gear early in the game.

How to solve the Starfield Mantis puzzle

While much of this side quest is quite simple, there is a section where we can’t blame you for needing a little help. So, we’ve put together this short Starfield Mantis puzzle walkthrough. After all, it puts a bit of a dampener on your mission into The Lair of the Mantis to get blown to pieces by turrets before you can pick up the Mantis Space Helmet and Mantis Spacesuit.

After making your way through the lair making light work of the spacers and low-level turrets, you bump into an NPC called Livvey. Talking to Livvey is optional, but if you do, he makes you aware of a puzzle in the next room that has devastating consequences for getting the wrong answer. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know the answer, but if you picked up the ‘Leon Voclain – Sic Semper Tyrannis’ note, you might already.

Yes, the answer to the Starfield Mantis puzzle is the word ‘TYRANNIS’. Knowing the word is half the battle, though, as the letters you have to walk across on the floor require precision controls, with the turrets ready to strike if you get a single letter wrong. Once you make it through this section, it’s plain sailing to take out a couple more Spacers before you pick up the unique armor and Razorleaf ship. Once you board the Razorleaf, it becomes your new home ship, but you can swap it back out by visiting a ship technician somewhere like New Atlantis or Akila City.

How to start the Starfield Mantis mission

To start this quest, you need to find the ‘Secret Outpost!’ datapad during your exploration of the Settled Systems. The problem is that finding this item is dependent on RNG, or in layman’s terms, it’s completely random. However, players have reported picking up the datapad as early in their adventure as during the Starfield opening while completing the One Small Step quest on Kreet, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for any mysterious datapad in storage or when looting bodies.

Mantis objectives

Most Starfield missions consist of several objectives that you must complete to advance the quest. As you complete each objective, your journal will be updated with the next objective.
