One Small Step walkthrough
Our Starfield One Small Step walkthrough has all the information you need to get through the beginning of the game. Once that’s done, you can go a bit further afield and check out many planets and systems waiting to be explored.
- Wait until the elevator has reached the bottom of the Argos Extractors Mining Outpost mine while Heller and Supervisor Lin explain the details of being a miner.
- Follow Supervisor Lin.
- Pick up the Cutter tool from the Cutter crate.
- Mine five Be – Beryllium resource nodes. You can find five in the cave to your left, but you can find others throughout the mine.
- Return to Lin and follow her.
- Follow Lin and Heller into the natural cave system.
- Explore the cavern. The objective marker will take you straight towards the Artifact.
- If you explore the rest of the cavern (beneath the intended pathway), you can find several Nd – Neodymium deposits.
- Use the Cutter to mine the Ct – Caelumite deposits blocking your access to the “???” object.
- Interact with the object, and you will see a vision of lights and warped music.
- You’ll wake up sometime later on a medical bed and be presented with the Starfield character creation screen.
- Choose an appearance and customize it
- Choose a background
- Choose 0-3 traits
- Name your character and confirm to exit the character creator menu. You can always customize your appearance at a later point in the game.
- Speak with Lin and follow her outside.
- Equip your helmet by opening your inventory window.
- Follow Lin to the Frontier and wait for her conversation with Barrett to end.
- Talk to Barrett.
- Defeat the Crimson Fleet pirates that arrive in pursuit of Barrett.
- Speak with Barrett. He’ll give you his ship, a Starfield watch, and make Vasco your companion.
- Board the Frontier, enter the cockpit and take off from Vectera.
- Wait for Vasco to begin the ship tutorial.
- Power up ship systems as Vasco directs.
- Fight off the Crimson Fleet ship.
- Defeat the two new Crimson Fleet ships.
- Fly to Kreet from the planet menu.
- Land at the Kreet Research Lab.
- Exit the Frontier, walk to the Kreet Research Lab, and enter the Lab.
- Follow the quest marker to the Kitchen area to overhear three pirates talking. Take them out and proceed.
- You’ll overhear two more pirates listening to an audio log about the Terrormorph – Starfield’s Deathclaw – which destroyed the facility during the Colony War. Kill the pirates, and the other enemies nearby.
- You’ll find numerous computers nearby that have data logs with lore specific to the area’s history.
- On the upper floor of this area (Lab 01), you will find a weapon case containing an Equinox laser rifle
- Proceed down the hall on the upper floor and fight the pirates in the next room.
- You’ll find a Novice-locked door in this area. You also find Hayden Wynn‘s personal computer here, which contains notes on events during the Colony War, plus some ammo nearby, and a Novice-locked safe with randomized loot.
- Head up the stairs and follow the path. There you find Hayden Wynn’s corpse, along with an audio log and more data logs on a computer.
- Proceed through the doors.
- Head up through the ladder.
- You’ll find a resource crate with randomized loot nearby. Head outside to confront the Crimson Fleet captain.
- Speak with Brogan (the Crimson Fleet Captain).
- You can convince Brogan that there’s nothing to steal, or you can fight him.
- If you do fight Brogan, a ship will land nearby with four additional pirates inside.
- Return to the Frontier. You can fast travel to it from the scanner view by looking at it and pressing the interact button.
- Fast travel to Jemison and wait for the Contraband scan to finish.
- Land in New Atlantis.
- Go to The Lodge in the MAST district – you can use the NAT – New Atlantis Transit to get there.
- Enter the library and speak with Sarah Morgan.
- Listen to the meeting.
- Place the Artifact on the table by interacting with the table.
- Talk to Sarah.
With that, our One Small Step walkthrough is complete, and you can throw yourself into the main quest. If you have any problems with these steps, check out the Starfield forum to see if anyone else is running into issues.

One Small Step mission console commands
If you just want to start the One Small Step mission, all you need to do is enter the following Starfield console command to begin:
startquest 00003448
Be warned that attempting to start a quest that requires specific triggers or hidden markers can result in game instability, so it is recommended you save your game before trying any commands. If however you are encountering a Starfield bug that prevents the mission from advancing, you might want to try the following:
resetquest 00003448
The above command will completely reset a quest (make sure you save your game beforehand in case it causes a crash to desktop). It also has the potential to prevent that quest from ever completing, meaning you’ll need to use the completequest 00003448 command to progress.
