You can download Starfield right now, but it’s going to take up a LOT of space

If you’ve already secured your access to Starfield with an Xbox Game Pass subscription, you can download Starfield now ahead of the September release. Unfortunately for some gamers, Starfield is very demanding of storage space, so you may need to make some room for it.

Starfield is due to release September 6, 2023, though special editions of the game’s pre order provide five days of Early Access. Fortunately, you can now download the game in advance so you don’t have to waste any time when Starfield launches.

However, Starfield’s size for download on Xbox and PC sits at 125GB of storage space. That’s more than a quarter of the total storage space of an Xbox Series S console.

Just to put that into perspective, Skyrim was only a 6GB download at launch – 20 times smaller than Starfield.

Perhaps then it isn’t too surprising that Bethesda partnered with Seagate to release Starfield-themed Xbox storage drives, allowing you to expand your total storage capacity.

Unfortunately, just because you can download Starfield right now doesn’t mean you can play it. A few Starfield downloaders are praying that a glitch might accidentally provide them with Early Access before the official release, but the Starfield download is designed to be locked off until September 2023. This design removes any download speed barriers when the game releases, allowing everyone who pre ordered the game to jump into the Settled Systems without delay.

So, make sure you secure your pre order now so you can start downloading Starfield, ready for the September release. With only two months to go, there’s still plenty of time to get your hands on the Constellation collector’s edition, and grab the official Starfield merchandise Xbox controller and headset.
