Into the Unknown overview

Into the Unknown is a Starfield Main quest. Like all other Starfield missions, you can find the full details of Into the Unknown in your mission log, and you can easily find your next objective location by following the quest marker, or by entering the scanner mode and following Starfield’s breadcrumb trail.

Into the Unknown is preceded by The Old Neighborhood, and followed by All that Money Can Buy.

Vlad has detected more gravitational anomalies with the Eye, and believes Artifacts could be found there.

You can begin Into the Unknown by interacting with 2250.

Into the Unknown walkthrough

Dock at The Eye in orbit around Jemison, and speak to Vladimir Sall. You will be given two avenues to explore, one of which will contain an Artifact, and one which will have an Artifact and the companion Andreja waiting for you:

  • Head to Tau Ceti II (Note: the planet can vary from player to player).
  • Head to Sumati (Note: the planet can vary from player to player).

Quest path 1 (just the Artifact)

  1. Fast travel to Tau Ceti II and land at the unexplored geophysical feature.
  2. Follow the waypoint to a nearby cave.
  3. Make your way around the cave until you reach the Artifact.
  4. Use the Cutter to mine the Caelumite surrounding the Artifact.
  5. Interact with the Artifact and you will see visions of light.
  6. Leave the cave and head back to your ship.

Quest path 2 (Andreja and an Artifact)

  1. Fast travel to Sumati and land at the Abandoned mine.
  2. Enter the deep cave by following the waypoint.
  3. Speak with Andreja and she will begin to follow you.
  4. Proceed through the cave and deal with the Spacers.
    1. You can easily drop several explosives from a high position on unsuspecting enemies in the main mineshaft area, dealing with one elite enemy with a powerful weapon, and additional health.
  5. Once you’ve made it to the Artifact, destroy the rocks surrounding it with a Cutter.
  6. Interact with the Artifact and you will see visions of light again.
  7. Leave the cave and head back to your ship.
  8. Head back to The Lodge and place the Artifacts that you gained onto the table.
  9. You can choose whether or not you want Andreja to be your companion.

Having completed both of the above quest paths, you can return to Vlad.

  1. Travel to The Eye and talk with Vladimir to hear about a new location which could contain an Artifact.
  2. Fly to the designated planet (Note: the planet can vary from player to player) and land at the Scanner Anomaly, which will almost always be on the north or south poles of a planet.
  3. Use your scanner to find a distortion. The rings of the scanner view will wobble and spike as you face the direction of the distortion Vlad wants you to find.
  4. Soon, you’ll spot a large temple structure. It shouldn’t be hard to miss, but the entrance certainly is. If you can’t find the entrance, circle around it until you spot a collection of lights. There are two entrances to the temple: one on opposing sides of the building.
    1. Use the breadcrumb trail function on your scanner if you get completely lost.
  5. Once inside, gravity will cease to function and your jetpack will activate (even if you don’t have one). The rings in the center of the room will rise from the floor and spin. A collection of sparkling lights will start to appear nearby. Fly through these lights until the rings in the center of the room stop spinning.
    1. A musical note will sound indicating you’ve completed the challenge.
  6. Fly into the center of the rings to gain the first Starfield power: Anti-Gravity Field. This power will be automatically equipped, but you can find it at the top of the Starfield inventory screen.
  7. Return to The Lodge on Jemison.
  8. Talk to Vladimir, and demonstrate your “anti-gravity field” power once prompted.
  9. You will gain a player-level appropriate number of Credits and also 3 x Med Pack upon completing Into the Unknown.

Into the Unknown mission console commands

If you just want to start the Into the Unknown mission, all you need to do is enter the following Starfield console command to begin:

startquest 000160A9

Be warned that attempting to start a quest that requires specific triggers or hidden markers can result in game instability, so it is recommended you save your game before trying any commands. If however you are encountering a Starfield bug that prevents the mission from advancing, you might want to try the following:

resetquest 000160A9

The above command will completely reset a quest (make sure you save your game beforehand in case it causes a crash to desktop). It also has the potential to prevent that quest from ever completing, meaning you’ll need to use the completequest 000160A9 command to progress.
